Myungseung Cha (1976, Korea)

Myungseun Cha received a BFA in Ceramic Arts from Sangmyung University in 1999, and an MFA from Kookmin University in 2002. She has participated in various group exhibitions and fairs such as Seoul Living Design Fair 2007, 2009, 2010, International Ceramic Expo Yeoju 2004 and “Three Potters” at Gana Art Space 2003. She is a laureate of the Tokyo Tableware Festival 2007.

Myoungseung Cha translates the instantly recognisable painting motifs of so-called ‘blue and white porcelain’ into a language of contemporary illustration. Cha’s seemingly sentimental depictions of flowers and birds, which mine traditional symbolism of harmonious existence between humans and nature, common in much Korean ceramics, teasingly pastiches ideas of good and bad taste, high and low culture, in some cases even including emojis in her designs, leaving us uncertain as to where we stand in relation to the object in front of us.
